Valley of the Damned
Armor as DR FAQ
What do I need to calculate for my character?
Defense = 10 + shield bonus + Dexterity modifier + other modifiers (including armor’s enhancement bonus)
This replaces your AC.
What happens when I put on armor?
Old System: The armor bonus from all worn armor and shields items adds to your AC.
New System: The armor bonus from worn armor becomes DR/armor. If you’re proficient with this armor, you gain an additional +1 to the DR armor provides for every 5 HD you possess (rounded down).
What overcomes the DR armor provides?
Old System: Brilliant energy weapons ignore armor and shield bonuses to AC. Touch attacks also ignore armor and shield bonuses.
New System: Two things can overcome armor DR: the type of weapon you’re hit with and the size of the creature hitting you. Mundane (non-magical) armor is overcome by magic weapons and attacks from creatures that are at least one size larger than you. Magical armor is overcome by adamantine weapons or creatures that are at least two sizes larger than you. Adamantine armor isn’t overcome by any weapons but can be overcome by creatures that are at least three sizes larger than you.
What happens if I have multiple sources of DR?
Old System: DR never stacks, you simply apply the most beneficial DR you have available.
New System: DR provided by armor stacks with everything. Attacks that bypass the second type of DR still do but you still gain the benefit of the DR from your armor, assuming the attack doesn’t bypass that as well. So if an attack only overcomes your natural DR or your armor DR, the other still applies.
What happens if I have natural armor (but am not wearing armor)?
Old System: Natural armor bonuses, like shield and armor bonuses, add directly to your AC.
New System: Natural armor becomes DR as well. You gain DR equal to your natural armor rating. Natural armor damage reduction is overcome by either magic weapons or creatures at least one size larger than you.
What if I have natural armor and am wearing armor?
Old System: Both the armor bonus and natural armor bonus add to your AC directly.
New System: Natural armor is added to the DR that armor provides and changes what can overcome it. Mundane armor and natural armor can only be overcome by adamantine or creatures that are at least two size categories larger than you. Magic armor and natural armor cannot be overcome by anything unless it is at least three size categories larger than you. Finally, adamantine armor and natural armor can only be overcome by creatures at least four size categories larger than you.
What about magical armor?
Old System: Any enhancement bonuses are added directly to your AC.
New System: Any enhancement bonuses are added to both your Defense and your DR/armor. Magical armor also changes what overcomes the DR provided by armor, now requiring an adamantine weapon or a Huge size creature or larger to ignore it (unless the armor is adamantine, in which case only a Gargantuan or larger creature can overcome it).
What if I’m wearing armor I’m not proficient with?
Old System: Your character suffers the armor check penalty of all armor worn to attack rolls.
New System: When using a shield you aren’t proficient with, you subtract the shield’s armor check penalty from the shield bonus as well. If you’re flat-footed, the shield bonus does not help you but the shield’s ACP still applies. With armor, you do not gain the additional DR as you increase in level if you are not proficient with the armor you’re wearing. Like the old system, armor you aren’t proficient with still penalizes your attack rolls.
